Re-stuffing a like new Jacquard fabric sectional’s cushions to make them more squishy?

I really love this couch and love the whole look and “line” of the couch, but I need it to be more comfortable without changing either of those 2 things! Please be specific on the type of cushioning if you can? Thank you!

CRASH COURSE ON FOAM CUSHIONS

If you have loose cushions (can they be removed from the couch?), you can replace the foam. Find a reputable retail upholstery shop that will either sell you the materials, or cut the foam, wrap it (with a Dacron / polyester batting), and refill them for you. Be sure to measure between the arms of the sofa, as well as the front-to-back dimension of the deck, so the combined pieces of foam fit properly.

If you want to do this yourself, buy the foam 1″ larger than the cushion dimensions for a snug fit that keeps the cushion looking nicely tailored. If you want the ’shabby-chic’ look, undercut the foam about an inch and double the Dacron layers for a soft and rumpled look and feel.

For example, If your cushion measures 4″ thick, 24″ wide, and 25″ front-to-back, you’d want a piece of foam 5″ x 25″ x 26″ for a snug fit. For a slightly loose fit, go with 5 x 24 x 25. For ’shabby chic’, go with 4 x 23 x 25 and double or triple the Dacron. Note that I didn’t undercut the front-to-back. If you do, the Dacron and the cushion cover will tend to roll off the front edge of the foam and look VERY VERY sloppy in a rather short time.

For a very good cushion, use a ‘high resiliency’ foam, typically about 2.5 pound. A medium cushion firmness at about ILD 28 is very common. If you want softer, go with an ILD 20 – firmer, go with a 34. ( these are good starting points – find the one YOU like – the ILD available is typically from 10 [super-soft] to 70 [brick-like]). Your supplier should be able to show you samples and, hopefully, let you sit on a piece to try it. Remember that your sofa has springs that will make the foam feel softer than the table at the foam shop. Also remember that most areas have health codes that do NOT permit you to return the foam once you leave the store with it, so make sure you like it when you buy it!

Back cushions are a similar issue, although many of these do not originally have foam, but are simply loose fiber packed into the cushion. These can be made more shapely by wrapping the entire loose fill with an envelope of the Dacron fiber batting, then reinserting the whole thing in the cushion. Otherwise, use a smaller-than-finished-size piece of foam (very soft) as a core, then wrap with several layers of batting to make up the bulk of the cushion. The core helps the back cushion maintain it’s shape. Remember that the back cushion supports much less weight than the seat, so less foam, and much softer, will work.

Of course, if your cushions can’t be removed from the sofa, this is all worthless, since the foam is integral to the upholstery and you’re stuck till you reupholster the whole thing.

FYI – Most foam shops won’t give you as much info as you just got here! Good luck!
