Installing granite counter top in bathroom today – Do we have to seal it?
The installer is coming today, and I don’t think he’s the one that would know if we have to seal the granite top. The owner/salesman is the one that we talk to (speaks English) and usually his installers don’t. That’s no put down, please understand.
Anyway, for a bathroom do we have to seal this? Or should it come sealed? What’s the typical routine for cleaning the granite and what things should we NOT use, or what should we be careful not to spill on it?
If it doesn’t need sealing, the I’d really like to focus on the things we shouldn’t spill on it etc… I keep hearing about hairspray etc…
Or is it mostly the cleaning products that are more damaging? I would only want to clean off water (deposits) marks etc…
I don’t plan on using any scouring powders, just a plain cloth etc…
We have a granite counter top on the island in our kitchen. It is about 9 years old. It has never been sealed. We have spilled just about everything you can imagine that you have in a kitchen. There has never been a stain on it.
We clean it with 409, windex and similar products. We do avoid cleansers that have a polishing agent like Ajax because it is possible to scratch granite if you really try. Keeping standing water cleaned up is a good idea because of the possibility of leaving calcium deposits on the granite.
On should not confuse granite with marble. Marble is much softer and some what porous. Sealing it is a good idea.
We just had granite up in our master bath 2 weeks ago. We have no plans to seal it either.
