What colors would punch up a bland living room in a rental home?

My boyfriend, our mutual friend Mike, and I are finally moving out of the hideous dump we’re in! Both guys have decided to leave the decor of the new place to me with only two requests: No pink and absolutely NO flowers.

Naturally I’m excited, but it seems as though our living room is going to be totally plain. We have a black leather couch, a black leather recliner, a black tv stand, a black book case and black framed photos that hang on the wall. The new place has white walls and white carpeting and we’re not allowed to paint the walls.

How can I really bring some color into the room? I’d love to incorporate blues and aquas, but I’m not quite sure how to make it all work… especially when we’re three broke college kids who REALLY want a nice place to live. Any help is appreciated!
I’m definitely not a fan of oranges, reds and yellows… I’d like something lighter

Your window treatments should be where you start. That alone will add color to the room. If you’re any good with sewing you can add alot with pillows for the couch and recliner. Vases filled with stones (maybe just one with flowers if the guys will let you get away with it).

Thrift stores and yard sales are a great way to find material for making a myriad of things, as are dollar stores. Case in point, I bought a sheet set from a thrift store for $2.00 and turned them into 2 window treatments and a case for a full length body pillow that sits on the day bed. A one dollar yard sale vase was the exact shade of blue that matched my kitchen counters.

If the guys are willing to give up the black picture frames, spray paint works wonders (sometimes my husband teases me that I live by spray paint).

You can also put a small runner on the tv stand before you set the tv on top of it.

Personally I would stay away from red as your ‘pop’ color only because a lot of people may think of the Chicago Bulls. Plus, it’s not a relaxing color. Blues and teals are a good choice and I’m sure the guys will like it.

Hope this helps you some.

Also, dyeing things is an option. I couldn’t find the exact shade of window treatments for my french doors, so I bought a set in white and bought some Rit dye. It took me about 15 minutes to get the exact shade I wanted! Best dang $3.50 investment I made.
