Does anyone know why the low diagonal cross bar on modern bikes is so thick?
I’m talking about the bar that goes from the handlebar post down to the pedals – I recently had my beautiful Dawes lightweight touring bike stolen, and am looking for a new bike. They all look so clunky with this really thick cross bar – I thought maybe it carried cables but the bike shop man said that it was just a design feature and bikes all look like that now. Is this really true, does anybody out there know about bikes and the purpose of this hefty bar?
The tube size is optimized for the frame design and material used. There are plenty of “skinny” tubed frames. You will find most aluminum frames have fatter tubes, while most steel frames have skinny tubes.
Here’s one of many as an example: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/surly/longhaul.htm
Check out this site you will find others as well.
